In these times, as many individuals explore a variety of cultures and ways of life one topic that seems to resurface often is the viewing of one’s self from a holistic perspective. Many have begun to embrace the idea of the person as a mental, physical, emotional and spiritual being. We are seeing this trend in many areas such as religion, economics, relationships, human services etc. Health and wellness is no exception. People tend to focus on the physical and aesthetic benefits of weight loss. Yes, weight maintenance provides several physical benefits such as improved appearance, circulation, blood pressure and heart health but there are many more.

For example, did you know that studies have shown that obesity is linked to memory problems and memory related illnesses such as Alzheimer’s? That is surprising to many people. Not to mention the emotional affects of weight loss like increased self esteem, and decreased depression and anxiety. Although there have been some exceptions, the vast number of people who desire to lose weight report negative thoughts and feelings related to their obesity.

Further, increased scrutiny of nutrition guidelines has prompted to food and drug administration to shed light on how both natural and artificial ingredients in certain food products affect mood. For example, fish and vitamin D have shown some evidence that they increase serotonin levels, which is a mood stabilizer. Increasing your intake of Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids may protect against depression due to their affects on the brain. These fatty acids can be found in foods like fish, walnuts and flaxseed. Because weight management can have so many positive effects on individuals, naturally it also can provide for more positive interpersonal relationships.

Many people experiencing unhappiness with their weight may isolate themselves from pursuing romantic relationships or within existing relationships. Obtaining one’s desirable weight can improve self confidence, mood and memory. It can also indirectly improve interpersonal relationships. These benefits promote a happier, balanced life.

What about you? Do you have any mantras or affirmations that help you stay emotionally fit?
